A standard appointment is between 50 minutes and 1 hour. Some therapists will book a 90 minute session for those wanting a bit longer, for example, those in relationship counselling.
Our Principal Psychologist also offers an intensive half or full day ‘Insight Therapy’ experience.
Do I need a referral?
No, a referral is not required to see a psychologist. However, to claim Medicare rebates you will need to obtain a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP. Please contact us or your GP to find out more about the rebate process. You will need to bring the Mental Health Care Plan to your appointment, so that the rebate can be claimed for you.
Rebates / Can I claim on Medicare or Private Health Insurance?
Yes, our clinicians are registered providers for Medicare and Private Health Insurers. As each private Health Fund is different, you may need to check if you are covered for Psychology services or we can do this for you at the clinic. You will need a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP if you are claiming rebates through Medicare.
I have seen another psychologist under a Mental Health Care Plan – can I use remaining sessions at Ringwood Psychology?
Yes, even if a Mental Health Care Plan is addressed to one psychologist, it can be used with another. However, it’s a good idea to keep your GP updated of any changes.
How long does it take to get an appointment with you?
We aim to allocate you a suitable therapist at the time of your initial enquiry. However, the impact of Covid has meant that we are currently experiencing considerable wait times for some of our therapists. We have brought additional clinicians on board to assist us during these times.
We aim to provide new clients with their initial appointment within two weeks of their enquiry. However, Ringwood Psychology has developed a reputation as a professional, experienced and compassionate ‘go to’ for many local GPs and health professionals, and our wait times can sometimes reflect this.
How long does therapy take?
Depending on the stories you bring to us, we suggest to clients that the average treatment length is usually about 10 sessions, but you should certainly experience some significant changes or insights almost immediately. Whilst some concerns can be resolved in just a few sessions, other more complex situations can take considerably longer. In these situations, therapy is best viewed as a ‘journey’ which may invole tapping in and out of therapy over an extended timeframe.
Everyone works at different speeds, and it is our job to encourage change at a pace comfortable to the individual.

Whatever you are most comfortable with. Sex therapy focuses on individual concerns as well as couple difficulties. We generally believe that the more you know about your partner’s beliefs around intimacy, the better you are able to negotiate the changes you are both wanting. Sometimes treatment requires either individual or joint sessions, however, this is always negotiated with the client.
Do you abide by a Code of Ethics?
Sex Therapists and Psychologists are required to abide strictly to the Code of Ethics of various governing bodies and industry Practice Guidelines.
